Pope Francis for Orthodox Easter: Sad to hear more guns than Resurrection bells

His wishes for Orthodox Easter were sent by Pope Francisspeaking to the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, reiterating his message for an end to the war in Ukraine.

The pontiff’s statement in detail:

“Today, many Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and Latin churches celebrate Easter, according to the Julian calendar. I address my warmest wishes, Christ is Risen! May he be able to fill hearts with positive expectations, to bestow peace where the barbarity of war prevails. Two months ago, now, the war started. Instead of stopping, he got tougher and it is sad, these days, to hear more the noise of weapons than the sound of the bell of the Resurrection.

Like the fact that, of course, weapons are increasingly replacing words. I repeat my call for an Easter truce, to stop the attack and help the impoverished population. “Peace be with you”, says the Risen Lord to his disciples. I ask you to intensify your prayers for peace and for the leaders of the various countries to listen to the voice of the people who want peace and not to escalate the conflict. “Finally, I greet the participants in the extraordinary peace march from Perugia to Assisi, which is taking place today.”
