Pope Francis has come closer today than ever to indirectly criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying a “ruler” is inciting war of nationalist interests.
For its part, Moscow claims that the action of February 24 is a “special military operation” aimed not at occupying territories, but at the demilitarization and “de-Nazification” of neighboring Ukraine.
Pope Francis has already rejected this terminology, calling Russia’s action in Ukraine a war.
Pope Francis said today that he was considering traveling to Kyiv. The statement was made by his personal aircraft.
Asked by a reporter from the same plane and on a flight from Rome to Malta if he was considering an invitation from the Ukrainian political and religious authorities, Pope Francis replied: “Yes, it is on the table.” He did not disclose further details.
