Pope Francis in Mosul – Historic tour of Iraq continues

THE Pope Francis arrived in Mosul to pray in this city in northern Iraq that was once a stronghold of the Islamic State and its population has now been decimated, while Christians now number a few dozen families there.

The 84-year-old pope arrived by helicopter from neighboring Arbil on the third day of his historic tour of Iraq.

Francis’s trip is the first papal visit to Iraq, where he declared coexistence and called for an end to violence in the name of religion.

Five Iraqi helicopters accompanied the pope on his visit to Mosul. The head of the Roman Catholic Church then arrived in an armored car at the ruins of a millennial church in the heart of Mosul, in Church Square, where he prayed for the victims of the war.
