Pope Francis went to the Gemelli hospital in Rome this Wednesday (29) to undergo previously scheduled check-ups, according to his spokesman, Matteo Bruni.
The 86-year-old pope earlier in the day attended the weekly general audience and appeared to be in good health.
Francisco suffers from diverticulitis, a condition that can infect or inflame the colon, and had surgery in 2021 to remove part of his colon.
Earlier this year, he said the condition had returned and was causing him to gain weight, but he wasn’t too worried. He didn’t go into detail.
Francisco also has a knee problem and alternates between using a cane and a wheelchair in his public appearances.
The pontiff told Reuters in an interview last year that he preferred not to have knee surgery because he did not want to repeat the negative long-term side effects of the anesthesia he suffered after the 2021 operation.
