Addressing the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis wanted to wish those who are celebrating Orthodox Easter today, and to make a new appeal for an end to the war in Ukraine. More specifically, the pope stressed:
“Today, many Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, and Latin churches celebrate Easter, according to the Julian calendar. I extend my warmest wishes, Christ is Risen! May he fill hearts with positive expectations, may peace prevail where it prevails. Two months ago, the war started. Instead of stopping, it became louder and sadder, these days, the sound of gunfire can be heard louder than the sound of the bell of the Resurrection. “Arms are increasingly substituting words. I repeat my call for an Easter truce to stop the attack and help the impoverished population.” Peace be with you, “the Risen Lord tells his disciples. intensify your prayers for peace and for the leaders of the various countries to listen to the voice of the people who want peace and not for the escalation of the conflict. “Participants in the extraordinary peace march from Perugia to Assisi, which is taking place today.”
