Pope Francis made a mention of solidarity with the victims of Pernambuco, this Sunday (5), during the recitation of Regina Coeli. The tragedy has left about 128 people killed.
“I wish to assure my prayers for the victims of the landslides caused by the torrential rains that occurred in the metropolitan region of Recife, in Brazil.”
On Friday, according to Vatican News, the church’s state channel, the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Archbishop Fernando Saburido, released a donation made by the Pontiff to the victims.
The initiative came from the apostolic nuncio to Brazil, Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro, who called Dom Fernando, expressing his solidarity with the situation. The nuncio, however, suggested that Archbishop Saburido write to Pope Francis talking about reality and asking for help.
“So I did. Yesterday the nunciature phoned confirming that the Pope authorized the donation of 30 thousand euros, in the name of Caritas Archdiocesan, which corresponds to a little more than R$ 150 thousand.”
“This valuable help is added to so many other gestures by brothers and sisters from Pernambuco, other states in Brazil and even abroad”, added the archbishop.
