Pope Francis on immigration: “The Mediterranean is a cradle of civilization, it should not become a grave”

THE Pope Francis repeated today his call for everything to be done so that immigrants do not lose their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean.

“The dream and the challenge is to enable the Mediterranean to recover its vocation, which lies in being a laboratory of civilization and peace,” Francis said during today’s weekly general audience. “The Mediterranean is the cradle of civilization and a cradle of life. The fact that it has become a grave cannot be tolerated nor should it be a place of conflict”, he added, as reported by APE-MPE.

THE International Organization for Migration announced that more than 2,350 people have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean this year, most in the central part between northern Africa and Italy. “The Mediterranean Sea is the complete opposite of the clash between civilizations, of war, of human trafficking,” the pope said. “It is a means of communication between Africa, Asia and Europe, between north and south, east and west, between people and cultures, peoples and languages, philosophies and religions,” he underlined.
