During a visit to Indonesia on Wednesday (4), Pope Francis questioned families in other countries who he says prefer to have pets rather than children, while praising Indonesians for having large families.
The pontiff praised the country’s families, saying they are “an example for everyone.”
“Keep it up, you are an example for everyone, for all the countries that perhaps, and this may seem funny, these families prefer to have a cat or a puppy instead of a child,” he added.
As he said this, the pontiff turned to Indonesian President Joko Widodo and asked, “This isn’t right, is it?”
In May of this year, at a conference in Rome, the pope made similar comments about homes that are not “lacking puppies” but “lacking children.”
The pope will leave Indonesia on Friday (6) before heading to Papua New Guinea, then East Timor and Singapore. He will have covered nearly 33,000 km when he returns to Rome on September 13.
