Pope Francis recalls Bishop Cláudio Hummes’ speech on care for the poor

Pope Francis lamented in a telegram the death of Cardinal Dom Cláudio Hummes, Archbishop Emeritus of São Paulo. In the document, the pontiff recalled Hummes’ participation at the time of the conclave that elected him to the most important position of the Catholic Church in 2013.

“I always remember the words that Dom Cláudio said to me on March 13, 2013, asking me not to forget the poor”, says Francisco.

From the cardinal’s words came the inspiration for choosing the name of the newly elected pope. The revelation was made by Pope Francis to journalists in 2013.

In the telegram, the pontiff says that he offers prayers for the religious at the same time as he is grateful for Hummes’ years of service with the Catholic Church.

“My prayers are also of gratitude to God for the long years of his dedicated and zealous service, always guided by evangelical values, to Holy Mother Church in the various pastoral tasks entrusted to her both in Brazil and in the Roman Curia, and for her commitment to recent years for the church that walks in the Amazon”, says Francisco.
