Pope Francis’ Ring is annulled at the last pre-competition meeting; understand

Pope Francis’ “Fisheries Ring” and lead seal, used in life to seal documents, were annulled on Tuesday (6).

The prop is named after St. Peter’s engraving, the first Pope, launching a net to the sea.

Francisco, however, did not wear the fisherman’s ring, but the Bishop’s own ring, a silver version, only with a cross. This version was buried with the pontiff.

Following the tradition, the fisherman’s ring would be destroyed after the Pope’s death, but as Francis did not use it, it is understood that he remained under the Vatican’s power until the annulment during the General Congregation of Cardinals on Tuesday, the eve of the conclave to elect a new one to the Catholic Church.

With the transition of 1.4 billion members of the Roman Catholic Church from one pope to another, a series of ancient rituals are put into practice, including the breaking of the old pontiff’s ring and seal so that they cannot be used by anyone else.

The conclave will start on Wednesday (7) in the Sistine Chapel, where only 133 cardinals under 80 can vote to elect the next Pope.
