Pope Francis urges Ukraine’s wheat not to be used as a weapon of war

Pope Francis made an appeal, this Wednesday (1st), to the international community for the release of grain retained, due to the war, in the ports of Ukraine.

“The blocking of wheat exports from Ukraine is very worrying, on which the lives of millions of people, especially in the poorest countries, depend. I make a strong appeal for every effort to be made to resolve this issue and to guarantee the universal human right to food. Please let wheat, a staple food, not be used as a weapon of war,” Francis said at the end of Wednesday’s general audience.

Ukraine is one of the world’s largest producers of wheat, a primary food product.

Increase in the price of wheat

A survey by MLB consultancy obtained by CNN shows that the price of wheat in Brazil soared 130% between January 2020 and April 2022.

The price jump was driven by a combination of factors that include the Covid-19 pandemic, commodity inflation and the war in Ukraine, which took two of the main suppliers of that market, Russia and Ukraine, off the table.
