Pope Francis spoke out this Wednesday (26) against the legalization of drugs and denounced drug traffickers as “murderers”, at the same time as he asked for help and support for addicts.
“The reduction of drug dependence is not achieved through the liberation of drug use – this is an illusion – as has been proposed, or already implemented, in some countries,” Francis told the crowds in St. Peter’s Square at his weekly audience .
“At the same time, however, let us remember that every addict has a unique personal story and must be heard, understood, loved and, as far as possible, healed and purified,” he said on what the United Nations designated as World AIDS Day. Drugs.
Francisco, 87, did not distinguish between so-called soft drugs, such as marijuana, which has been legalized for recreational use in several countries and some US states, and “hard” drugs, such as heroin and cocaine.
“We cannot ignore the evil intentions and actions of drug traffickers. They are murderers,” the pope added.
Francisco, who is Argentine, also condemned the “destructive impact” of drug production on the environment, saying it is “increasingly evident, for example, in the Amazon basin” of Latin America.
