Pope Leo XIV, elected during the afternoon of Thursday (8), described his view of the Catholic Church to the faithful, saying that he sees it as the one that “builds bridges” and dialogues.
“We have to seek together to be a missionary church. A church that builds bridges and dialogues,” said the new Pope in his speech on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Leo XIV also asked people to “show our charity” to the other “and dialogue with love”, according to an English translation.
Who is Pope Leo XIV?
Robert Prevost, 69, lived as a missionary in Peru from 2014 to 2023, where he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo. The Pope has been Peruvian citizenship since 2015.
Before becoming Papa, Predost said in an interview with Vatican News that he still considers himself a missionary. “My vocation, like every Christian, is being a missionary, proclaiming the gospel wherever it is.”
After the experience as a missionary in South America, Prevost led a Vatican office for episcopal appointments.
In addition to showing his view of the Catholic Church, Leo XIV also sent a message to Peru and made a tribute to Pope Francis during his first speech to the Catholic faithful.
