Pope Leo XIV led the prayer “Regina Caeli” to over 150,000 faithful in the Vatican, this Sunday (11), and made an appeal for peace in Ukraine and Gaza.
“Dear brothers and sisters: Good Sunday. I consider God’s gift that the first Sunday of my service as the Bishop of Rome is the Sunday of the Good Shepherd, the fourth Sunday of Easter Time,” said the Pontiff, at the Central Counter of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Pontiff highlighted the “great need” of the Catholic Church for “priestly and religious vocations.”
“It is important for young people and young people to find, in our communities, welcome, listening and encouraging in their vocational path,” added Leo XIV.
In the end, the Pontiff took the opportunity to make a speech with an appeal for peace in global conflicts and recalled his predecessor, Pope Francis.
“In today’s dramatic scenario, from a third world war, slowly waged, as Pope Francis said, I also address the leaders of the world with an always opportune appeal: the war never again!” Said Leo XIV.
Quoting directly the conflict in Eastern Europe, the Pope said he carries in his heart “suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people” and asked to be “the possible to achieve authentic, just and lasting peace.”
“The prisoners will be released and that children can return to their own families,” he said.
He also claimed to feel “a lot of pain” to see what happens in the Gaza Strip, in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Pope Leo XIV called for an “immediate ceasefire” as well as humanitarian aid to the civilian population and the liberation of all hostages.
“I welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. I hope that in the upcoming negotiations will be reached a lasting agreement,” he added.
At the end of his latest public appearance, the Pontiff took the opportunity to make “a loving greeting to all mothers”, marking Mother’s Day Sunday.
