Pope Leo XIV Choose simple shoes for first mass

Pope Leo XIV wore black shoes during his first mass as a pontiff this morning (09), just as Francis wore during his papacy.

Popes traditionally use red moccasins. Now both Leo XIV and its predecessor seem to have opted for simplicity.

When Francis stepped on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in 2013, he did so with a simple white tunic, eliminating much of the pomp surrounding the papacy.

But when Leo XIV revealed himself on Thursday (08), he wore the traditional red papal robes.

Upon returning to the standards, perhaps the pontiff wanted to show that it is not trying to clone Francisco’s papacy. But from his first speech in St. Peter’s Basilica, to his first homily – and now even his choice of shoes – he seems determined to follow a Franciscan path.

We do not yet know if Leo XIV will live in the splendor of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, as is customary, or if – as Francis – will choose the humblest pension Santa Marta.
