Pope Leo XIV stated that the marriage between men and women is the foundation of society, speech, which reaffirms the traditional teaching of the church, was made during his first speech to diplomats of the world on Friday (16).
“It is the responsibility of the rulers to work to build harmonious and peaceful civil societies. This can be achieved, above all, investing in the family, founded in the stable union between a man and a woman,” he said.
In 2012, as a cardinal, the pontiff gave a speech criticizing “compassion for anti -Christian lifestyle choices” found in the mass media, including same -sex couples and “their adoptive children,” although 11 years later he said that his position had developed “in the sense of the need for the church to open and be welcoming.”
During the speech, the Pope also recalled the church’s position against abortion, called for protection to religious freedom and said he would continue to seek interreligious dialogue.
Leo XIV also stated that the dignity of migrants must be respected, while appealing to nations to suspend the production of weapons and prioritize peace efforts.
Later, this Friday (16), the Vatican said he could be a mediator about the war between Russia and Ukraine, with the Pontiff stating that “the Holy See is always ready to help gather enemies, face to face, so that the people can once again find hope and recover the dignity they deserve, the dignity of peace.”
