The new pontiff chosen, Pope Leo XIV, held the first mass this Friday (9), in the Sistine Chapel, located in the Vatican.
The ceremony began around 11:10 am (local time), 6:10 am Brasília time, and lasted just over an hour.
The first mass did not have the presence of the general public, being restricted only to the cardinals who participated in the conclave.
Faithful from around the world were able to accompany the Mass, which was broadcast live by the Vatican’s official channels.
The first homilies are often used by the popes to define priorities.
The homily of the current Pontiff seems to demonstrate the commitment to follow a Franciscan path.
When choosing to relive the name, Leo XIV may be signaling the priorities for the papacy, recalling a pope known for their dedication to social justice, fair wages and safe working conditions.
In the speech on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV said that the church can still hear “the weak but always brave voice of Pope Francis”, his predecessor.
