Pope Leo XIV prays alone in the Sistine Chapel after being elected; See video

Pope Leo XIV was applauded by the cardinals in the Sistine chapel and prayed alone after being elected the new leader of the Catholic Church on Thursday (8).

Cardinal Robert Prevost, 69, was a little -known missionary of Chicago, and was considered a surprising choice by experts, becoming the first elected Pope of the United States.

Prevost has spent most of his ecclesiastical career as a missionary in Peru, and has a double Peruvian nationality since 2015. He only became cardinal in 2023, giving few interviews to the media and rarely spoke in public during this period.

Prevost became the 267th Catholic Pope, after the death last month of Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope who led the church for 12 years.

Vision similar to Francisco’s

During the first speech to the Catholic faithful, Leo XIV said he sees the Church as the one who “builds bridges” and dialogues. In addition, the pontiff also paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, encouraging the faithful to resemble the legacy of their predecessor.

“Let us keep in our ears the weak voice of Pope Francis who blesses Rome. The Pope who blessed Rome gave his blessing to the whole world that Easter morning,” said Leo XIV, referring to the day of Francis’ death on 21 April.

“Allow me to continue this blessing. God loves us. God loves everyone. Evil will not prevail,” he added in Italian, addressing the multitude gathered in the Vatican.
