Pope Leo XIV says he will make “all efforts” for world peace

Pope Leo XIV spoke on Wednesday that he would make “all efforts” for peace and offered the Vatican as a mediator in global conflicts.

Elected last week as successor to the late Pope Francis, the first leader of the US -born Global Catholic Church made repeated peace appeals in the early days of the papacy.

The Pontiff has called for the end of violence by addressing the members of the Eastern Catholic Churches, some of which are based in countries plagued by conflicts such as Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, and often face persecution because they are religious minorities.

“The Holy See is always ready to help gather enemies, face to face, so that they can talk to each other, so that people everywhere may once again find hope and recover the dignity they deserve, the dignity of peace,” said Leo XIV.

“War is never inevitable. Weapons can and should be silenced, because they do not solve problems, only aggravate them. Those who make the story are the peacemakers, not those who sow suffering,” he added.

The pontiff warned against the emergence of simplistic narratives that divide the world between good and evil.

Last Sunday (11), the Pope asked for an “authentic and lasting peace” in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza, the liberation of all Israeli hostages held by the Radical Hamas group and greeted the fragile truce between India and Pakistan.

Leo XIV spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (12) in his first known conversation with a foreign leader.

He offered to facilitate peace negotiations while world leaders attend the inauguration mass, according to the Ukrainian leader.

Zelensky expects to be present at the May 18 event at St. Peter’s Square and is ready to hold parallel meetings, Cabinet chief Andriy Yermak told Reuters on Tuesday (13).
