Pope Leo XIV says that church should continue “missionary effort”

During the celebration of his first Mass in the Sistine Chapel, this Friday (9), Pope Leo XIV stated that the Catholic Church should continue with its “mission” in the ends of the globe, a call that resembles the priorities of its predecessor, Pope Francis.

“These are contexts where it is not easy to preach the gospel and witness its truth, where the faithful are ridiculed, combated, despised, or, at best, tolerated and mourned. However, precisely for this reason, these are the places where our mission is desperately necessary,” said Leo XIV.

“Lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning of life, the neglect of mercy, the terrible violations of human dignity, the family crisis and so many other wounds that afflict our society,” he continued.

During his papacy, Francisco emphasized his commitment to the “peripheries” of the globe, visiting many countries never before visited by a Pope.

Lion himself spent many years serving the church in Peru.

The first homilies are often used by the popes to define their priorities. Leo’s homily seems to demonstrate his commitment to following a Franciscan path.
