Pope Leo XIV: Understand the rites of the Pontificate Mass

The start of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV is held this Sunday (18), from 5am (Brasília time).

According to the Archdiocese of Sao Paulo, the event cannot be considered a “Mass of Possession”, as the Pope does not “take possession” of the craft – he begins the pontificate immediately at the time he agrees to be a pontiff as soon as he is elected in the conclave.

Next, learn about the main rites that will be held to mark the beginning of the Ministry of Leo XIV.

Eucharistic celebration

The Eucharistic celebration is the first rite of the ceremony-in which Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) will be present-with which Leo officially begins his pontificate. In it, the importance of episcopal insignia is emphasized: the Pallium and the Ring.

According to Christian tradition, the moment reinforces the bond of the new Pope with Christ and the Church, as well as evoking the mission entrusted to him by the Risen Lord.

The rite takes place in the Basilica of St. Peter and in the square in front. The stop in the apostolic confession of the Basilica underlines the narrow bond of the bishop of Rome with the apostle Peter and his martyrdom, in the same place where he confessed with blood his faith, with other Christians.

Introduction rites

The new Pope descends, along with the patriarchs of the Eastern Churches, to the tomb of St. Peter and remains in prayer. Then incense the apostolic trophy.

Meanwhile, two deacons carry the pastoral pallium, the fisherman’s ring and the book of the Gospels in Procession, to deposit them on the altar of the celebration.

With a story that dates back to the 13th century, the Fisherman It is among the most recognizable items of papal insignia. Named in honor of St. Peter, who was a fisherman and, according to Catholic tradition, the first Pope, the accessory was used by Pope Francis in ceremonial events during his 12 years of reign.

The initial procession, after the stop at the confession of St. Peter, goes to the altar under songs. Then the rite of blessing and sprinkling with holy water is performed, followed by the corner of glory and the prayer of collection.

Imposition of the Pallium and Delivery of the Ring

After the introduction rites and the Proclamation of the Gospel in Latin and Greek, three cardinals approach the Holy Father to impose the Pallium and deliver the fisherman’s ring.

THE Canopy It is an ancient episcopal insignia made with lamb wool, illustrated by various testimonies of the church priests. In its current form, it is a narrow strip of white wool that rests on the shoulders, over the Casula, with two black ends pending in front and back, so that the clothing reminds the letter “Y”. It is decorated with six black silk crosses: one at each end that goes down over the chest and back, and four in the shoulder -resting ring.

It is also adorned on the front and rear part, with three pins (Acid), representing the three blackheads of the cross of Christ.

Delivery of the fisherman’s ring-has a meaning of seal, ring-sylil, that radically authenticates faith, a mission entrusted to Peter to confirm his brothers-concludes with the invocation to the Holy Spirit, so that God will enrich the new Pope with fortress and meekness.

After the Delivery RiteThe Holy Father blesses the Assembly with the Book of Gospels. Then the symbolic rite of “obedience”provided to the Pope by twelve representatives of all the categories of God’s people from various parts of the world.

The celebration proceeds with the Holy Father’s homily and the profession of faith.
