Pope uses wheelchair in public for first time after knee pain crisis

Pope Francis used a wheelchair in public on Thursday for the first time since a bout of knee pain limited his ability to walk.

In an audience with a group of nuns in the Vatican’s Audience Hall, Francis was led to his seat on the stage.

An aide then helped him out of his wheelchair and into a sitting position.

Francisco, 85, has had to cancel or reduce his activities several times in the past month because of pain in his right knee.

Prior to Thursday, he was able to walk about 10 meters from the stage’s side entrance to his seat in the center, albeit with the help of aides.

Several times during the Easter period last month, Francis attended, but did not preside over, Masses in St. Peter’s Basilica.

In each case, he delegated to an archbishop or cardinal to say Mass while he was seated during the service and also read his homily seated.

The pontiff said doctors told him they would give him an injection to help his joints move. There is no information if this treatment has already started.
