Pope visits Kazakhstan to meet with religious leaders

The Vatican announced today that Pope Francis will travel to Kazakhstan in September for a meeting of religious leaders, a gathering where the pope had previously said he hoped to meet the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

In a statement issued, the Vatican said that Francis will be in the capital Nur-Sultan on September 13-15 to participate in the 7th Conference of Leaders of the World and Traditional Religions.

Francis has said in several recent interviews that he hopes to meet there with Cyril, the patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Vatican statement announcing the trip makes no mention of Cyril. The announcement was made public in Russian as well as in Italian and English. Kazakh and Russian are the two official languages of the country.

Cyril has given his undivided support to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Francis had planned to meet Cyril in Jerusalem last month after a trip to Lebanon but both trips were postponed.

The late Pope John Paul II had visited Kazakhstan’s capital in 2001, then known as Astana.

The day before yesterday, Saturday, on his return from his trip to Canada, the 85-year-old pope, who due to severe knee pains is obliged to travel in a wheelchair, said that he will no longer be able to travel at the same pace as before, also speaking for the possibility of resigning.

He confirmed, however, that he wants to go to Kazakhstan, a “calm, not a lot of travel” trip.
