According to the daily activity report of the Popocatépetl volcano, published by the National Center for Disaster Prevention of Mexico (Cenapred), the volcano erupted again this Saturday (31).
The report states that the ash that came out of the mouth of the volcano and mixed with the air resulting from the eruptions spread to the northeast with the effect of the wind, and it was recommended that citizens residing in settlements in the states of Puebla and Tlaxcala take precautions against possible ashfalls and mud flows that can occur with rain.
In addition, authorities warned citizens to stay away from the vicinity of the volcano due to the stones and pebbles that could fall into the environment, due to the possibility of an eruption at any time.
Popocatépetl, which means “the mountain that makes smoke” in the Aztec Nahuatl language, is the second highest volcano in North America, with an altitude of 5,452 meters. 16 kilometers north of Popocatépetl, whose crater is 900 meters in diameter and 150 meters deep.
There were five eruptions at the volcano on Friday (30), bringing the total to 35 recorded in December.
The Popocatepetl volcano, which has seen an increase in activity for more than a year, ranks fifth among volcanoes likely to have a major eruption in the coming years, according to scientists at the University of Manchester.
