Popular Pharmacy: medicines for high cholesterol, Parkinson’s and rhinitis will be free

Starting this Wednesday (10), the Ministry of Health will offer new medicines and supplies from the Farmácia Popular program free of charge to the entire population.

The measure, confirmed by the ministry, is due to the celebration of the program’s 20th anniversary. Medicines for the treatment of high cholesterol, Parkinson’s disease, glaucoma and rhinitis are now included in the list of medications that can be obtained free of charge.

Previously, only medications indicated for people with diabetes, hypertension, asthma, osteoporosis and contraceptives were available free of charge. As a result, around 3 million Brazilians should benefit.

Currently, the popular project offers 41 items to the population. With the new decision of the Federal Government, 95% of the medicines and supplies will be provided free of charge to citizens, which is equivalent to 39 of the health items distributed. In addition to medications, diapers and sanitary pads are also already offered to the population by the program.

Popular Pharmacy Program

Created by the Federal Government in 2004, the Farmácia Popular program emerged as a means of making medicines and other health supplies available to Brazilians in an accessible manner.

Last year, the program was relaunched by President Lula to include new free services, including osteoporosis medications and contraceptives. In 2024, the program also started distributing free sanitary pads to help vulnerable people and students in public schools.

According to the health department, over the 20 years of the program’s existence, more than 70 million Brazilians have benefited.

Today, the initiative is present in 85% of the country’s cities and has the capacity to serve 96% of the population.
