Porto Alegre's Civil Defense issued an alert for the possibility of intense rainfall of between 50 and 100 millimeters per day and winds between 60 and 100 km/h this Monday (27), which could prolong the flooding that persists in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the warning, the meteorological event could cause streams to overflow and slopes to slide, in addition to the risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches and electrical discharges.
The rains are expected to start in the early hours of today and tomorrow, and could last until Monday night, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), which monitors weather conditions.
In a statement, Civil Defense stated that the Permanent Emergency Action Commission (Copae), made up of municipal and state bodies, monitors weather forecast updates and maintains teams ready to provide assistance to the population.
The agency also advises the population to take shelter in a safe place, in addition to staying away from poles, trees and signage and advertising signs, not entering floods, observing changes in the slopes and avoiding using electronic devices connected to the electricity grid.
Situation in the state
The warning for rain comes almost a month after the start of floods in the south of the country, which have already left 169 people dead and 56 missing. The tragedy resulted in 806 injuries and more than 2.3 million people lost.
Furthermore, neighborhoods, mainly in the North Zone of the city, in the region of Salgado Filho airport and Arena do Grêmio, remain submerged. The state records more than 800 cases of leptospirosis.
Classes in Porto Alegre were scheduled to resume this Wednesday (22), however, due to the weather conditions that hit the capital, this Thursday (23) they had to be suspended again.
