Porto Alegre Municipal Guard starts using body cameras

Body cameras are now part of the daily routine of Porto Alegre Municipal Guard agents. The equipment, which is attached to their uniforms, allows continuous recording for up to 10 hours, has audio recording, infrared, night vision and geolocation.

160 cameras were purchased and, since Monday (24), the crews have already been working with the equipment installed in the ballistic vest.

The general commander of the Porto Alegre Municipal Guard, Marcelo Nascimento, explained to CNN that technology can both help the agent and show an inappropriate attitude.

“The public security service often requires that, within the law, technical means be applied and, in this process, agents are often victims of false accusations. Or, even, in the case of the agent committing a misconduct, this equipment helps to provide transparency and security for all people involved in that incident,” he said.

On the first day of the new equipment, a fugitive was captured. Porto Alegre city hall provided a video of one of the first approaches. In the images you can see three men being searched, one of them had an outstanding arrest warrant and has an extensive criminal record for robbing pedestrians and robbing public transport. According to Nascimento, inspiration comes from other countries, but also from Brazilian states, such as Santa Catarina, which uses cameras in the routine of military police. “The more technology in the fight against crime, the better,” he commented.

The city of Porto Alegre explained that all the material captured by the cameras will be stored on restricted-access servers, without real-time transmission, and that external access will be on demand. The investment was R$623,000.
