Several streets in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul, are flooded this Tuesday (21) after the Guaíba River reached its highest level since 1941, reaching 3.46 meters.

The situation led Mayor Sebastião Melo (MDB) to declare an emergency in the city. The measure “simplifies the hiring necessary to minimize the impact of the Guaíba flood on the population”, according to the municipal administration.
The city hall has already announced the opening of three shelters to welcome people who had to leave their homes. Late Tuesday afternoon, the first group of people are expected to arrive at the shelters, coming from the Sarandi neighborhood.
According to the Municipal Civil Defense, around 920 people have been removed from their homes since the worsening of the flood, with the majority coming from the Arquipélago neighborhood.
Donations
The municipal administration informs that it is collecting donations of hygiene and cleaning materials, non-perishable food and water. Donations can be made between 9am and 5pm until next Friday (24), at the following locations:
- Municipal Administrative Center (Rua Gen. João Manoel, 157), in the Historic Center
- Shopping Total – Store 1019 – Espaço Solidário (Avenida Cristóvão Colombo, 545), Floresta neighborhood
Rains in the southern region
In total, at least eight people died in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina due to the rains of the last few days. Of the total number of fatalities, five were in Rio Grande do Sul and three in Santa Catarina.
The situation could worsen even further in the coming days. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a storm warning for today and tomorrow (22) in areas of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The total volume of rain could reach 100 millimeters in 24 hours, with winds of up to 100 km/h and hail falls.
On Wednesday, rains are also expected to hit Paraná, according to Inmet.
