A portrait of the actress Marilyn Monroe made by the painter Andy Warhol will be auctioned in May with an estimated value of 200 million dollars (about R$ 993 million), which would set a record, announced the Christie’s this Monday (21).
The work, “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn,” “is poised to be the most expensive 20th-century painting ever sold at auction,” said Alex Rotter, head of 20th- and 21st-century art at Christie’s.
The 1964 image of Monroe’s face with bright yellow hair, rosy skin and pale blue eyeshadow is one of five paintings Warhol did of Monroe.
Warhol “used a screen printing technique on these paintings that he never used again. It was very complicated,” Rotter said.
The work comes from the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation in Zurich. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world.
“The sale of this unique painting will constitute the highest-grossing philanthropic auction since the Peggy and David Rockefeller collection in 2018,” said Christie’s North American President Marc Porter.
Christie’s says the highest price paid for a Warhol was for the painting “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)”, which sold for $105 million in 2013.
