Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina move 4.2 million tons in January

The ports of Paranaguá and Antonina handled 4.208 million tons in January between shipments and landings, a record volume for the month, informed Portos do Paraná. The volume is 1% greater than the 4.157 million tons moved in the same period in 2022.

“The increase recorded among bulk was what most contributed to the new high”, said in a note the director-president of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia.

Solid bulk represented almost 60% of everything that was handled in the month (with 2.475 million tons). In exports, the highlight was corn, with an increase of 189% in January compared to January last year.

Soy and corn meal were up 17% and sugar advanced 15%. In imports, wheat (+93%), barley/malt (+26%), salt (+100%), methanol (+67%) led the increases. Among liquid bulk, the increase in handling in ports was 12% in the comparison between January 2022 and 2023, with 722,073 thousand tons.

Of general cargo, 1.011 million tons were handled, a volume 7% lower compared to January 2022. “The drop was mainly impacted by the reduction in volumes of sugar in sacks and cellulose for export”, said the port authority.

Container volumes were in line with last year, with a movement of 88,038 TEUs (unit equivalent to a 20-foot long container).
