Lisbon airport, which has already reached its limits and where dozens more flights have been canceled in recent days, is facing “sometimes serious” problems, Portugal’s airports operator admitted today.
“It is true that in recent weeks we have experienced problems, sometimes serious, but we are working with our partners in an effort to improve the service,” Thierry Ligonier, director general of ANA, the body that manages ten Portuguese airports, told a parliamentary hearing. .
This hearing by ANA, a subsidiary of the French construction and public works group Vinci, was held on the occasion of the cancellation of dozens of flights at Lisbon airport in recent days and long queues for passengers.
He was mainly asked about the situation in Lisbon and Porto, the country’s second city where queues, especially at border control, were huge.
“In terms of the cancellations we’ve seen at the moment, the answer is probably on the side of the airlines, because they’re the ones making the decisions,” Ligonier said.
After the lifting of health restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, European airports are finding it difficult to hire staff, while strikes are multiplying in several airlines, causing flight delays and cancellations.
The problem of congestion at Lisbon airport and the urgent need to decongest it, due to the tourist boom experienced by the Portuguese capital, has been discussed for years.
Last week, Portugal’s socialist government announced its intention to build a new additional airport in Lisbon, to be located in Montijo, on the south bank of the Tagus estuary, before changing its mind less than 24 hours later.
After a discussion with Prime Minister Antonio Costa, Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos regretted communication and coordination errors within the government.
