Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza has begun talks today to form a new socialist government by the end of February by outgoing Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who has been in power since 2015 and is the winner of Sunday’s parliamentary elections.
Following the steps provided by the Constitution, the head of state will have meetings with the eight parties represented in parliament in the afternoon before receiving Mr. Costa tomorrow, Wednesday, at 21:00 Greek time.
Rebelo de Souza is then expected to reappoint him as prime minister and invite him to form his new government.
Reacting to information about the composition of his new group, the Prime Minister’s Office clarified in a statement that it will not be known before the last week of February, after the publication of the voting results and the opening of the new National Assembly.
Pending the distribution of four seats nominated by voters in constituencies abroad, Antonio Costa’s Socialist Party won the election with 41.68% of the vote and an absolute majority of at least 117 deputies out of a total of 230.
The election was marked by the rise of the far right, the anti-systemic party Chega (Enough) which became the country’s third largest political force with 7.15% of the vote and 12 deputies.
