Portugal: Hackers stole and published on the dark web personal data of passengers of the national airline

An alarm has been raised in Portugal as announced on Thursday (22/9) by the national airline, TAP hacker stole personal customer data and posted it on dark web.

TAP said in a letter to customers – passengers of how the cyber attack which happened last month stole names, nationalities, email and residential addresses, telephone contacts and frequent flyer numbers from its servers.

But the state-owned company pointed out that all payment details appear to be secure.

“There are no indications that any payment data has been recovered from TAP’s systems,” he noted, as reported by the Athens News Agency. The airline also said it immediately took restrictive measures to keep its systems running and protect other data.

She urged her customers to be wary of unsolicited contacts asking for personal information, telling them not to click on links and attachments in suspicious emails. TAP also advised them to change their passwords to stronger ones and said it would refrain from further contacting individual customers about the matter to avoid confusion.

TAP chief executive Christine Umieres-Widener told reporters the company was “very serious about citizens’ data” and said the incident was worrying.

He did not disclose the number of affected customers, which some local media have put at around 1.5 million, saying such estimates do not necessarily reflect the facts. He promised additional investments in cyber security.

Portugal’s military was recently the target of a cyberattack in which hundreds of classified NATO documents were allegedly stolen and put up for sale on the darkweb, according to Diario de Noticias newspaper. Portuguese authorities have not admitted to wiretapping, but have said they are investigating whether it was carried out.
