Research on case of classified documents sent by NATO to Portugal found for sale on the Dark Web the Portuguese Authorities began.

The documents were stolen after a cyber attack which targeted the general staff of the country’s armed forces, the prosecution reported on Tuesday (13/9).

We confirm the launch of an investigation to be led by the prosecution of the Central Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP)” a representative of the prosecution told AFP.

The reaction of Portuguese justice came after the information published on Thursday by the newspaper Diario de Noticias, according to which hundreds of secret documents sent by NATO to Portugal were found for sale in Dark Web.

The theft of the documents came after a cyber hack “perpetrated by bots programmed to detect these types of documents”, targeting the general staff of the armed forces and the military’s Intelligence services, according to the Portuguese newspaper.

According to Diario de Noticias, the incident was noticed by the US Intelligence services, who notified the Portuguese authorities in August through the US embassy in Lisbon.

An investigation by Portugal’s cyber security services identified the armed forces’ general staff, the army’s intelligence service and an agency of the defense ministry as targets of the attack, the newspaper said.

Responding to a question from AFP and as reported by the Athens News Agency, Prime Minister Antonio Costa’s office repeated the answer it had given to the newspaper, underlining that the government is working “so that its credibility Portugalas a founding member of the Atlantic Alliance, to remain intact.”

“Each time there is a suspected breach (…) the situation is analyzed in depth and measures are taken to increase cybersecurity awareness,” the Portuguese government added, without however confirming or denying the theft of the documents.
