Portugal is the longest suspension footbridge in the world

Hugo Savier was one of the first people to cross the longest suspension footbridge in the world when it opened today, near the northern city of Aruca. Portugal.

“Oh, let’s be!”, Said the 42-year-old anxiously, as soon as he stepped on his foot, with too much courage, in the transparent metal construction, 516 meters long, together with another nervous friend and a guide.

Hidden among the mountains, inside the Unesco-recognized Aruka Geopark, the bridge hangs from a height of 175 meters, above the river Paiva.

The landscape is serene, but crossing the bridge requires strong nerves. As it is attached to metal cables and two huge towers at both ends, the construction oscillates with the slightest step.

“I was a little scared, but it was worth it,” says Savier, having crossed over. “It was fantastic, a unique experience, an adrenaline rush.”

The bridge was opened today only for locals, but from Monday everyone will be able to visit it, having made a reservation.

Locals hope the’s 2.3m-euro site, which took about two years to build, will help the area recover, especially after the devastating Covid-19 pandemic.

Standing on the bridge, Arucca Mayor Margarita Belem said the bridge is part of a broader strategy to encourage more people to move and stay in the area.

“The challenges we had to overcome were many; but we did,” the mayor told Reuters proudly.

“There is no other bridge like this in the world.”
