Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza has issued a decree dissolving parliament today, in the last remaining official step in the run-up to the early general elections on January 30, his office announced.
The decree was issued on the last possible day for the dissolution of parliament, which must take place at least 55 days before the elections.
The election came after parliament rejected a draft budget tabled by the Socialist minority government in October, ending the country’s political stability over the past six years.
The Socialists lead the polls with between 38.5% and 39%, well ahead of the main opposition Social Democrats with 24.6% -28.1%, but without a parliamentary majority.
