Portugal: Railway problems caused by railway strike

Large problems in train services in Portugal were caused today by a 24-hour strike of the railway, which mainly demands salary increases, announced the railway company CP.

Almost 93% of the scheduled train services had been suspended from midnight until this morning at 08:00 local time (10:00 Greek time) in the whole country, ie 235, according to data released by CP.

The unions estimate the participation of workers in this mobilization at around 95%.

With the exception of intercity trains, which are operated at a minimal level, “traffic has been virtually disrupted from north to south of the country,” said Jose Manuel Oliveira, co-ordinator of Fectrans, the sector’s main union. transport, which announced the strike.

The strikers are asking for a 90 euro increase for all employees, while the salary increases proposed for this year amount to 0.9%.

For workers, “a 0.9% increase actually means another year without a pay rise, in a context where the cost of living is rising sharply,” the union official said.
