Portugal has blocked the sale of a 10m-euro mansion owned by the sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Publico reported today, according to Reuters.
According to Publico, the former owner of the Chelsea football team tried to sell the property 15 days before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine through the Millhouse Views company based in Delaware, which is owned by Millhouse, which manages its assets. .
Portugal’s largest bank, Caixa Geral de Depositos, observed the move and alerted authorities, the newspaper reported.
Publico stated that the property is located on plot 17 in the San Lorenzo North area of Quinta do Lago. A Reuters witness said there was a sign outside the fenced mansion saying it had been sold.
Abramovich has been sanctioned by the British government and the European Union over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He himself has denied having such ties.
The billionaire received Portuguese citizenship in April 2021 under a law offering naturalization to the descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula during the medieval Holy Inquisition.
The case shocked the whole of Portugal, leading prosecutors to launch an investigation and detain a rabbi responsible for the certification that allowed Abramovich to obtain citizenship.
