Portugal supports EU sanctions against Russian oligarchs even if they are citizens

Portugal will implement restrictive measures against Russian oligarchs agreed at European Union level even if those subject to sanctions are Portuguese citizens, Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva said on Tuesday.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has acquired Portuguese citizenship in April 2021 under a law giving the right to naturalize to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages.

Abramovich is among the many Russian billionaires expected to be added to the European Union’s blacklist today. He was the target of sanctions imposed by Britain last week.

“These sanctions have been upheld by the Portuguese authorities and (will) be unequivocally enforced,” Santos Silva said in a speech to parliament. “This happens regardless of whether those who applied for a residence permit for investment purposes or are Portuguese citizens.”
