Portugal: Ten new cases of smallpox – At 49 in total

The Portuguese Health Authority (DGS) today confirmed ten new cases of smallpox in monkeys, bringing the total to 49, equivalent to the number of confirmed infections in neighboring Spain.

The two countries of the Iberian Peninsula are among the main centers of the recent outbreak of usually mild viral disease, except for the endemic areas of the virus in parts of western and central Africa.

The DGS reported that all confirmed cases were male, most under the age of 40. All of them are in stable condition and no one has been hospitalized.

Spain today confirmed an additional case. The Madrid area, where almost all of the country’s infections have been identified, most of which are linked to an adult sauna, is expected to update the case numbers later today.

Most of the infections that have been detected worldwide so far in the epidemic are not severe and many, but not all, have been detected in men who have sex with men. Symptoms include fever and rash.
