Portugal’s Catholic Church will pay financial reparations “according to the gravity” of sexual abuse suffered by its members after a shock report was published in 2023, it said in a statement today. Financial reparations are not intended to “erase what cannot be erased”, but “should be proportionate to the severity of the damage suffered by the victims”, the synod of bishops underlined in a statement. It will not be just a “symbolic” compensation, explains the synod of Portuguese bishops, which published today the regulation on the procedure to be followed by victims who claim compensation.
