THE Portugal, plagued by a month-long drought, will face a heat wave and the risk of forest fires from tomorrow. “The government will issue a warning aimed at limiting any activity that could endanger the population“, said the Minister of the Interior, Jose Luis Carneiro, after the meeting of the leadership of the country’s civil protection service.
The increase in the alert level, which will be in effect until the end of next week, will allow the authorities “to mobilize the necessary meansa” to face any problems in the coming days, the minister added.
About a thousand firefighters were trying until late tonightbring three major fires under control which broke out earlier in central and northern Portugal, in the regions of Santarem, Aveiro and Guarda. The meteorological service (IMPA) predicts that the high temperatures will continue until at least next Thursday. In the zones further from the coasts, in the south and in the Tagus and Douro valleys, the temperature will reach 40 degrees and in some areas even 42.
