In Portugal, 56,426 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed yesterday, a new record since the outbreak of the new coronavirus pandemic, with the total number of recorded cases reaching 2,059,595.
During the same period, another 34 patients succumbed to complications of COVID-19, with the pandemic toll rising to 19,447 deaths by March 2020 at this stage, according to figures released by the Directorate-General for Health.
It was the third consecutive 24 hours that broke the infection record. Another 45 people had to be admitted to hospitals, bringing the total to 2,004. Of these, 152 are in intensive care units (ICUs).
Authorities in the Iberian country yesterday began offering commemorative doses of COVID-19 vaccine to all citizens over the age of 35. So far, more than 4 million residents have received a booster dose, while more than 8.7 million have been fully vaccinated.
