Hundreds of protesters formed human chains around five embassies in Lisbon tonight, demanding the return of peace to Ukraine, which was invaded by Russian forces on February 24.
Protesters marched in front of the embassies of the four permanent members of the Security Council (France, Britain, the United States, China) and Germany, responding to an initiative by the Union of Ukrainians of Portugal.
In this way, the gathered “urge the strongest nations to close the Ukrainian airspace for the Russian forces, in order to stop the attacks”, explained Yuri Kontra, a member of this Union.
The demonstrators held Ukrainian flags and placards calling on powerful countries to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin. Each human chain sent a letter to the embassies, calling on the five governments to show determination towards Russia.
About 29,000 Ukrainians live permanently in Portugal and are one of the most important foreign communities in that country. On Tuesday, the Portuguese government announced that it would simplify regulations on the reception and integration of Ukrainian refugees. It envisions, among other things, that they will be given access to health services, help finding a home and the right to work in the country.
