pH Reagent Lip Balms are the new makeup essential for Gen Z and Alpha. And now there are so many on the market that it’s difficult to choose. I decided to try these two: YSL Loveshine Candy Glow and Posh Balm by Victoria Beckham Beauty and I decided to use them for a long period so I could get a good idea of their performance.
Victoria Beckham Beauty Posh Balm under analysis
The name: The first one I used was the one from the brand Victoria Beckham Beauty from the name, Posh Balm Nourishing Lip Shinewhich would win over any ’90s girl who lived through the Spice Girls era.
The packaging: Let’s start with the thin case, similar to a milky white mini electronic cigarette, which matches perfectly with the thousand new generation Apple accessories: a super chic accessory. The first thing that comes to mind as soon as you see it is to put it in your handbag, it takes up little space and is a detail of no small importance for those who go around with shoulder straps reduced to a minimum to facilitate movement on the bicycle and make it coexist perpetually with concealer and facial sun cream with SPF 50. But not only that, it is such an elegant accessory to pull out when necessary and feel as cool as its creator. The mini VB logo on the top of the case and the Victoria Beckham writing in the iconic geometric and delicate font make the bullet even more attractive, it is the perfect example of quiet luxuryand if you suffer from FOMO with this little gem you will be in the ranks of those who are in the know.
The texture: soft, slightly sticky and buttery, even if it seems to have the appearance of a gel, upon first application it gives a pleasant sensation of deeply nourished lips, which is its first prerogative. It is available in four colors Glacetransparent white suitable for the whole family, Fleur, a delicate rosé peach, Cassisslightly framboise and Coletteslightly bright red, which is what I have chosen as my daily companion. The pH reagent effect is definitely a plus because it makes the natural color of the mouth more vivid and then does not create any unsightly effect if it is not applied perfectly inside the lip contour. In the past it had happened to me with another pH reagent lip balm that I couldn’t leave the house, because not having applied it precisely it seemed like my lips were red, from the wind and cold, inside and outside the contour of my mouth!
The performance: is the sensation that the lips are really hydrated, in the long term as the claim says? I don’t know, the effect remains if it is reapplied regularly. I used it in the mountains where there is always a fresh breeze and they didn’t chap for the entire period. Thanks to the murumuru seed butter complex which prevents chapping, a vegetal alternative to lanolin which seals in hydration and cucumber seed oil, this would be the balm’s antioxidant and skinifying, therefore caring, share. Added to its pedigree is also the fact that it is cruelty-free, vegan, nut-free, gluten-free and above all fragrance-free, which in my opinion is definitely a plus, because having the taste of apricot or strawberry in your mouth as happens with many balms gourmand is a sensation I have never loved. This characteristic allows me to define it as age-inclusive.
The downsides: did you think they weren’t there?
The first: even though I put all my strength into it and tried to push and rotate, once the buttery cylinder comes out it never comes back down. Because it doesn’t have to, then I realized what the system is each twist = one perfect dosebut it wasn’t intuitive to get used to this new case. Furthermore, the mechanism is noisy, and is at the expense of discretion (why draw everyone’s attention when you are about to reapply the lip balm?).
The second: furthermore its duration, without eating or drinking, is not exactly longlasting. It remained intact throughout the time I watched the film Deadpool & Wolverineso 2 hours and 7 minutes, but as soon as you eat and drink it disappears, like all the others, probably.
It costs 35 euros
YSL LOVESHINE CANDY GLOW
The name: YSL Loveshine Candy GlOW holds a promise already in domination and delivers on it. At the first application, creamy, the lips sparkle.
The packaging: Given my need to fit the contents of a mini beauty case into a small handbag, I am looking for space-saving packaging. YSL Loveshine Candy Glaze is beautiful, iconic, in a bright silver shade and fits perfectly in my mini bag.
The texture: it is surprisingly slippery, almost liquid and yet very soft, hydrating and with that healing sensation typical of the best lip balms. As soon as you apply it you almost feel as if your lips have literally increased in size, thanks to the buttery texture, which seems to add a few millimeters of thickness to the mouth. And if you look in the mirror you actually see them more plump and very shiny, just like those of the thousands of influencers who show off their mirror-effect shimmering pout in videos on social media. I must confess that I didn’t think it was a truly achievable result. The pigments that regulate themselves according to the pH of the skin have their merit and adapt perfectly to the lips without smudging.
The performance: The plumping and volumizing effect it gives to the lips is truly surprising, more than any other product that has boasted the same promise. It may be thanks to its pH-reactive formula, which in this case too is smudge-proof: even if you make a small inaccuracy in the application, the effect of lips reddened by the cold does not appear on the contour. Or perhaps the formula enriched with shea butter and passion fruit oil, highly nourishing ingredients that are good for the lips and make you feel like you have contributed to doing good in the world by purchasing the product because they are collected by Ourika Community Gardens, a oasis of sustainability founded by YSL Beauty and managed by a women’s cooperative.
The downsides: did you think they weren’t there?
The first: its very soft texture rich in oils unfortunately melts in the summer heat, so my advice is to keep it in the fridge or use it as a winter balm. In this respect it doesn’t exactly meet the needs of those who, like me, want to carry their SOS 365 beauty products with them days a year.
It costs 44 euros
