Posidonia: it’s time to think about underwater forests too

For the past 30 years the world’s forest area has shrunk by over 420 million hectaresand these numbers must be added those relating to loss of forests submarine. In particular of oceanic posidonia“Lung of the Mediterranean”, which, due to wild fishing and pollution, is disappearing: in the last 50 years, 29% of the grasslands have regressed with dangerous repercussions on biodiversity and coastal erosion, as well as on the greenhouse effect. That’s why on the occasion of the World Forest Day21 March, there are those who (well) thought to remind us that even those that are underwater must be protected, taking the first step: it is the startup zeroCO2 which develops reforestation projects with a high social impact in different regions of the world and of Worldrisea non-profit organization active in the conservation and enhancement of the marine environment.

«Posidonia»: the forest of the sea

Together they have just started “Posidonia “the first marine regeneration activity in Sardinia: the place is Golfo Aranci, where zeroCO2 and Worldrise are going to plant, to begin with, 2500 Posidonia plants regenerating 100 square meters of Blue Forest. A start, with a highly symbolic value, to reforest the sea but also make us aware of the role of underwater vegetation and how important it is to protect it.

The student encounters with Cousteau Jr

For this reason, until 25 March it will also arrive in Golfo Aranci Philippe Cousteau Jrgrandson of the well-known oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and founder of EarthEcho International, a non-profit environmental organization developed to support the new generation active in protecting the ocean. With him, the students of the area will be able to get to know the value of posidonia, with classroom lessons, bio walks and the monitoring of sea water quality with EarthEcho kits. Furthermore, on 24 March there will be an opportunity for students to meet and Philippe Cousteau Jr, for the official launch of the start of planting, which will actually take place in May.

The marine environment generates between 50 and 80% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbs a third of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere»Said Andrea Pesce, founder of zeroCO2. The President of Worldrise, Mariasole Bianco, continued: “Protecting it means safeguarding our future and with this reforestation project we can act concretely both for the protection of biodiversity and for the fight against the climate crisis.“.
