The foreign ministries of Turkey and Armenia said on Friday that the talks were held in a “positive and constructive” atmosphere, adding that both sides committed to a full normalization without preconditions. They said that the special envoys “exchanged their preliminary views on the normalization process”.
Tensions between Turkey and Armenia flared up during the 2020 war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Turkey has accused ethnic Armenian forces of occupying territory belonging to Azerbaijan. Since then, Turkey has called for rapprochement, as it seeks greater influence in the region.
In separate but similar statements, the foreign ministries said the date and place for the next round of talks would be finalized later.
