Positive tests for Covid-19 quadruple on New Year’s Eve

The amount of positive results for Covid-19 quadrupled in Brazilian pharmacies in the week of New Year’s Eve compared to Christmas. The survey is by the Brazilian Association of Pharmacies (Abrafarma).

Between December 27 and January 2, 283,700 people took the rapid test, up 50% from the previous week. The number of positives jumped from 22,300 to 94,500 in one week – four times more.

The percentage of positive results in relation to the total reached 33.3% on New Year’s Eve, well above the 11.8% registered at Christmas.

In the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the indicator reached 46% and 49%, respectively, in New Year’s Eve. In other words, practically 1 in every 2 Covid-19 tests carried out in Rio de Janeiro were positive.

Positivity for the disease had been accelerating since early December. On average, 17.4% of tests carried out last month were positive, up from 9.3% in November. Last year, the percentage was 18.6%.
