Post partum, the photos that tell what it is (really) to become a mother

No, after childbirth you don’t always get back into shape quickly. You don’t get used to it immediately new life, in which there is little sleep and evil and we dedicate ourselves, body and soul, to the newcomer, neglecting ourselves. And it doesn’t always happen that you fall in love with your child at first sight.

Yet, in most cases, the images that, in the newspapers, should tell about postpartum life are not so honest: they hide that whole range of emotions and complex realities which involves motherhood. To many new mothers life with the new born is scary, and this is not talked about enough.

But now Australian underwear brand Modibodi has partnered with Getty Images to more candidly capture the reality of postpartum life. The photo collection Postpartum Unfiltered shows several women in the first 12 months after the birth of their children in a series of images taken by Getty photographers from around the world, their life which, at the same time, is exhausting and even exhilarating (often at the same time). The goal is to make women feel seen, understood and supported as individuals after childbirth, not just as parents. The images can be used by the media and become a resource for years to come.

“While we were designing our new postpartum range, the only images we could find didn’t reflect the full picture: we understood that something had to change», Explains Kristy Cong, founder and CEO of Modibodi and, in turn, mother of four children. “This campaign confirms our commitment to addressing taboos and initiating conversations about women’s health with care, attention and empathy, to help them prepare for the physical and emotional changes that accompany the postpartum period and beyond.”

Creating “authentic” images of such an individual and personal experience was not easy, as Svetlana Zhukova of Getty Images explains. The photographers «they have drawn on their families and friends to capture very real perspectives of this vulnerable part of the life of so many women ».
