Post uses images from different angles to disparage pro-Bolsonaro September 7 act

Misleading: Contrary to the post on Twitter, this year’s records are the two images used to compare the audience present at the acts of September 7, 2021 and 2022. Visual elements identified in the two photos allow us to verify that it is the same scenario – Esplanada dos Ministries, in Brasília, on September 7, 2022. The first photo, attributed by the publication to the year 2021, was previously published by Folha de S.Paulo to show the public present in 2022 in the celebration of the bicentennial of Independence. The second image, attributed to 2022, was, in fact, made this year by photo reporter Sérgio Lima, from Poder 360. The purpose of the comparison in the post was to show that, supposedly, the 2022 event had less participation than the 2021 event. , which would not be possible to conclude from the photos, since they were recorded from different angles.

Investigated Content: post on twitter with two photos, it compares what would be the amount of public present in the demonstrations called by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on the Esplanada dos Ministérios on September 7, 2021 and 2022. One of the photos seems to have more public than the other. In the caption, the author says: “This photo Bolsonarismo doesn’t want you to spread it because it shows how weak they are”.

where it was published: Twitter and Telegram.

Completion of Proof: The content of a publication on Twitter that suggests the comparison of the public, based on two photos, in the acts carried out on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasília, on September 7, 2021 and 2022, is misleading. , the two images correspond to this year’s demonstration. Visual elements identified in the two photos, such as banners affixed to the facades of the ministries and a banner that reads “Movimento Brasil – 200 anos”, allow us to verify that they are the same scenario.

The photo falsely attributed to 2021 in the verified post was published by Folha de S.Paulo to show how the Esplanade was on the 7th of September 2022. A similar photo was also released on the 7th by the Bolsonaro campaign and by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ).

The second image in the tweet, attributed to 2022, was actually taken this year. by photo reporter Sérgio Lima, from Poder 360. In contact with Comprova, the professional analyzed the two images and highlighted that the height from which each photo was taken influences the point of view. According to Lima, the photograph taken from a lower height can show less empty spaces, from a more horizontal look, in relation to the photograph taken from a higher point.

misleading, for Comprova, is all content taken from the original context and used in another so that its meaning undergoes changes; that uses inaccurate data or that leads to an interpretation different from the author’s intention; content that confuses, with or without the deliberate intent to cause harm.

Scope of publication: As of September 12, the post had been retweeted 989 times; had also received 4,800 likes and 75 comments. On Telegram, where the content was also shared, it had been viewed by 1,500 people by the same date.

What the author of the publication says: The post author’s Twitter account does not allow sending private messages. He also shared the image on the Telegram channel. Comprova made contact through the application, but there was no response.

How do we check: We use the reverse image search feature offered in the app InVID to try to find the website where the photos were first posted. The results pointed to the matter of Power 360, in which the second photo had been published; for a report by Folha de S.Paulo, in which the first photo was located; and for checking the to the factsalso published by Earth.

We also looked for visual elements that could indicate in what year the record was made and compared it with other records from the 7th of September. We also looked for information in the press about the audience estimates for the 2021 and 2022 events.

Finally, we contacted the author of the second photo, photo reporter Sérgio Lima, Folha de S.Paulo and the author of the verified tweet.

Both photos are from 2022

In the two images of the tweet, it is possible to observe the same truck with a banner commemorating the bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil. The banner says “Movimento Brasil – 200 years”. There are also panels arranged next to the ministerial buildings. In addition, in 2021, there was no structure set up for the 7 de Setembro parade, an element that can be seen in both photos.

Check it out below:

Photo 1, attributed to 2021 in the verified post, was also published by Folha de S.Paulo to show how the Esplanade was on the 7th of September 2022. The credit only points out “Disclosure/2022”. When contacted, Folha said that the author of the photo asked not to be identified.

Comprova was unable to identify who was the first person to post the image. When doing the reverse search, found photo 1, in better resolution, posted on September 7, 2022 by a reporter on Twitter. It was at 1:07 pm – 43 minutes before the post checked here. In the comments, the author of the tweet states that the record is from 2022. Comprova tried to contact the reporter to ask about the authorship of the photo, but did not get a response until the publication of this report.

A very similar photo, but from a different angle, showing the structure of the parade, the panel in the ministerial building and the truck with the bicentennial banner, was shared on Twitter by the senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), eldest son of the president, on September 7, 2022 – another record that allowed, from the comparison of visual elements, to conclude that photo 1 was taken this year and not in 2021.

Regarding the second photo verified here, it is a record made in 2022, on Independence Day, as the post states. The image was authored by photojournalist Sérgio Lima, from Poder 360. To Comprova, he sent a print of the metadata (image registration data on the device in which it was captured), which indicates that the record was created on September 7 , at 10:49 am, with a Canon EOS 5D camera. See below:

The date and time that appear next to the “Modified” information in the print above represent the moment when the file was accessed by the photographer so that the information could be passed on to Comprova.

Over the phone, Sérgio claimed to have taken an image of the top floors of the National Congress building. He explained that, in the act of September 7, 2022, drone flights were prohibited, and that the only remote aircraft of this type in operation during the event belonged to the Bolsonaro campaign.

When analyzing the two photos used in the verified tweet, the photojournalist highlighted that the height from which each photo was taken influences the point of view. “These are the big differences between the two photos: quality and height”, observes Sérgio. “The photo I took is taller than the other one [de autoria desconhecida]. And my photo has much more definition and quality than this one, the photo being questioned”, he adds. The professional describes that the photograph taken from a lower height can show less empty spaces, from a more horizontal look, in relation to the photograph taken from a higher point. “If the photo is taken from two different angles, you will get two different views of the same space,” he explains.

In addition, the photojournalist was at the event held on September 7, 2021, and his photos were released in a Power360 matter to enable a real comparison between the two years. In the photo from last year, in which there was no civic-military parade, it is possible to see the absence of structures with awnings on the side streets of the Esplanada. This mobile construction appears in the two replicated photos in the verified tweet.

There is no official public estimate on the Esplanade

Although the Bolsonaro government have said that more than 1 million of people participated in the Esplanade demonstration in 2022, the Military Police of the Federal District (PMDF) has not released an official attendance count. By the unofficial survey of the Power 360, the event would have gathered around 100 thousand people. To make the estimate, the website took into account an analysis of high-resolution panoramic photos of the Esplanada dos Ministérios when the event was being held and detailed maps with the Esplanade’s footage. Power 360 also published a video made by photojournalist Sérgio Limafrom the top of the National Congress building, where it is possible to observe the public that attended the event this year.

Vehicles like Sheet it’s the UOL compared the two manifestations and pointed to similar adherence in the acts of 2021 and 2022.

At last year’s event, PMDF estimated participation of 400 thousand people.

why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content that goes viral on social media about the pandemic, public policies of the federal government and presidential elections. Content that misinforms about candidates can harm the electoral process as a whole by influencing voters’ decisions. Comprova tries to collaborate so that voters’ choice is made based on true and reliable information.

Other checks on the topic: O to the facts also concluded that the same photo is from 2022 and not from 2021 as the post claims.

In recent checks, Comprova also pointed out that the Electoral Justice rejected Lula’s candidacy in 2018, not in 2022which, contrary to what video suggests, Simone Tebet promised to cut taxes on the poorestif that video makes apology for crime by encouraging voters to write their own vote in the electoral section’s signature book.
